Save More or See the World?
This post from personal finance blogger Get Rich Slowly reads like a Suze Orman “Can I Afford It?” segment where callers phone in and give their financial situation and ask her blessing to buy something (usually ridiculous like a speed boat or an overpriced piece of art that they love).
I can’t help thinking that you should do what you love and if travel is part of what you want in your life you should be able to come up with a way to incorporate it. If you really need someones blessing to take your life into your own control and escape soul crushing cubeville you aren’t ready for whatever it is you want to do. They may not want to be a computer programmer, but I’m not sure this reader actually knows what they want to do. If I was the author responding I would tell this guy to try to negotiate a sabbatical from his job so he still has a backup plan, take part of his savings and travel, testing out his new life style. I wouldn’t tell him to quit his job, sell his condo in this market and go for it. But that’s just me, I’m cautious, I like to have backup plans and know what I’m getting into. What do you think?
